1. Nice to meet you
by David Deveau
    TAKE 1 - Situation Dialogue

OkJoo: Hi, Mi Sun. How are you doing?
Mi Sun: Not too bad, thanks. Nice to meet you.

This is a typical greeting exchange that might occur between speakers at a beginner English level.

Can you identify as being odd or peculiar with this dialogue? What tells the observer that one or both of them is at the beginner level?

In this situation, it is obvious that Ok Joo gives a typica greeting and asks Mi Sun how she is doing - much the way a native speaker would greet someone. Mi Sun, on the other hand, responds to the question correctly, but then says "Nice to meet you." She is probably trying to convey to Ok Joo that she is happy to see her.

The expression "Nice to meet you" is usually reserved for a situation when you meet someone for the first time. After you hve met that person, and you see them again, you can use some other expressions to convey that you are happy to see them.

Some of these are: Glad to see you.
    Good to see you again.
It's wonderful to see you again.

    TAKE 2 - Situation Dialogue

Ok Joo: Hi, Mi Sun. How are you doing?
Mi Sun: Not too bad, thanks. Great to see you again.
